Rising costs coupled with environmental control of metals has resulted in a greater interest in “conservation technologies” for recovery and reuse of valuable metal by-products from wastewaters and/or side liquid streams from manufacturing processes. Among other conservative technologies for metal control in the environment, selective ion exchange, membrane separation, and electrodialysis, play a predominant role in view of their simple concept and process design. The paper presents an ion exchange process for selective Cr(III), Fe(III), and Al(III) separation and recovery for reuse, from a sulphuric acid extract of a tannery sludge. The results presented prove that decontamination of industrial liquid streams from toxic metals by ion exchange is feasible and may, in most cases, be economical even with conventional resins. Details on separation of ionic species based on their speciation in the liquid phase are also given in the paper.
