The discussion presents few of the results of a wide research work about the weathering processes affecting large upper strata of stiff clay deposits in southern Italy (Subapennine Blue Clays), and their effects on the clay mechanical properties. The weathering of the examined clays is fundamentally due to drying-wetting cycles and does not give rise to changes in the clay index properties. It does affect the current specific volume, state boundary surface and swelling capacity of the clay.

Abstract

The discussion presents few of the results of a wide research work about the weathering processes affecting large upper strata of stiff clay deposits in southern Italy (Subapennine Blue Clays), and their effects on the clay mechanical properties. The weathering of the examined clays is fundamentally due to drying-wetting cycles and does not give rise to changes in the clay index properties. It does affect the current specific volume, state boundary surface and swelling capacity of the clay.
