In this paper we propose an original algorithm for evaluating, in a video distribution system transmitted in a VBR manner, a statistical estimation of the aggregate bandwidth needed by a given number of smoothed video streams of various types. This evaluation is important for an efficient admission control algorithm which establishes if, given a number video streams on the network and a specified loss probability, a new video request can be admitted or not. Each video stream is characterized by its bit rate marginal distribution, approximated by a histogram derived from real video traces. The results of this algorithm are compared with simulations.

Abstract

In this paper we propose an original algorithm for evaluating, in a video distribution system transmitted in a VBR manner, a statistical estimation of the aggregate bandwidth needed by a given number of smoothed video streams of various types. This evaluation is important for an efficient admission control algorithm which establishes if, given a number video streams on the network and a specified loss probability, a new video request can be admitted or not. Each video stream is characterized by its bit rate marginal distribution, approximated by a histogram derived from real video traces. The results of this algorithm are compared with simulations.
