We investigate the physical and geometrical characteristics of a microwave frequency particle accelerator, based on two-dimensional defective photonic bandgap structures. Our simulations, based on the well known Finite Element Method approach, analyze several structures to compare device performances in terms of Quality Factor. We take into account some important geometrical features, such as the number of grating periods, the shape of cavity, the material (metallic or dielectric) constituting the rods of the photonic band-gap structure.

Abstract
