The Harmony Search (HS) method is a global optimization technique which attempts to reproduce the mechanisms of jazz improvisation. Like each player tries some harmony which is later combined with the harmonies of the other players in order to obtain the best melody, the HS method searches for a global optimum corresponding to the best combination of the design variables. This work presents a new HS formulation where each new trial design replaces all designs that are found worse than it. Conversely, only the worst design overall is replaced in the classical implementations of the HS method. Multiple search directions serve to find the region of design space where there is the largest reduction in cost function and to steer back the design to a feasible region if some trial design turns infeasible. Furthermore, each new trial design is generated including the local information provided by the gradient of the cost function evaluated at the current best record. The validity of the new formulation is verified in three weight minimization problems of truss structures with sizing and configuration variables.
