The study of the Norman tower in the abandoned village of Craco (MT) is part of a larger research aimed at the development of a project for conservation and enhancement of the entire urban organism which, complying with the nature of the area, can not take into account the geological critical condition and the consistent safety problem. The reading of the ancient settlement demands a deep knowledge of building types, materials, building techniques and deterioration conditions. The buildings, partially collapsed, facilitate not only the anatomic study of masonry and laid materials but also the recognition of previous consolidation works, facilitating thus the constructive understanding of the architectures in danger of disappearing slowly, but surely. Among the investigated architectures, the Norman tower has been the subject of a special study, made possible by a non-destructive diagnosis helpful to know the vulnerability and real conditions of the tower in order to guide the restoration project based thereby on criteria of minimal intervention, compatibility and recognition.
