Heightened concern over potential acts of sabotage against water distribution systems is imparting greater importance to the conceptualization of contaminant migration and the value of simulating contaminant dispersion scenarios which are as realistic as possible can help to improve the safety of water distribution networks. In this paper, the well known model for water quality simulation embedded in EPANET 2 is linked to an external hydraulic solver which is based on a pressure driven algorithm that accounts for the relationship between nodal flows and pressures and incorporates a leakage model. In particular, this arrangement permits evaluation of the role of leakage on contaminant spread while simultaneously providing the quality simulator with a more realistic description of nodal flows. Several contamination scenarios are simulated and the results are compared to the same events unfolding within a demand driven and leak-free environment

Abstract
