Abstract

The Xylella fastidiosa, an emerging serious threat for the Apulian olive growing, is a bacterium propagated by insects vectors (carriers) and connected with the Complesso del Disseccamento Rapido dell’Olivo” (CoDiRO). The fight against these bacteria seems arduous since there aren’t curative methods. To operate in this field and the employment of antibiotics, that might have a positive effect, it is not authorized in Europe.Recently there have been many scientific studies based on the employment of Geomatic techniques to support Precision Agriculture. Such increase due to a greater availability of remote and proximal sensing instruments has led to an significant progress in complex biological phenomena monitoring suitable for running in stand-alone or web-ba sed GIS platforms. In this way it is possible to integrate heterogeneous spatial data in a single operative environment. Such data can be obtained by means of direct methods (monitoring operations i. e. counting the development phase, damage assessment , sanitary conditions ascertainment of cultivation, etc.), or indirect methods (remote sensing data processing i.e. mapping areas affected by phytopathologies, biomass assessment, etc.). The resulted data can be used for the implementation of provisional models on defence against the onsite adversity allowing the adaptation of intervention strategy in order to rationalize the cultivation defence. In the present work the suitability of of photointerpretation techniques to recognize and classify the plants damaged by CoDiRO in GIS environment was evaluated.
