A procedure based on the use of a CCD camera is reported to automatically evaluate the shape and dimension of edge of specimen and for the simultaneous smoothing and edge data enhancement. The approach is bidimensional and there is very little influence of non planarity of the specimen since the algorithm is not based on physical principal but result to be just numeric data manipulation. Data obtained from simulated SPATE results on hole in 2 plate specimen were processed with different noise upon signal ratio. The error due to noise and blurring at the edge is reduced form about 15-20% to 2-8% depending on the noise/signal ratio. This is meant to be the first step for a complete automated procedure of stress separation.
