Historic cores are continuing landscapes, living organism that organically evolved by combining natural elements and anthropic signs. They are evidence of both tangible and intangible heritage that defined structure and use of spaces. Traumatic destructions, which are affecting since decades the historic cores of the Middle Eastern and North African regions, have damaged the coherence of both their built environment and social structure. It is therefore necessary to define strategies for their recovery. Placing specific interest on the urban landscape as a whole, and not on the restoration of monumental areas, this paper aims at outlining design strategies for the recovery of the historical centers of the MENA region, based on methodologies involving the local community in processes of choral reconstruction of their urban society, through the reconstruction of houses and open spaces. The case study of the ancient city of Aleppo is the paradigm of this action.
