The main target of this paper is to define and study new multihop architectures capable, potentially of supporting a sustained throughput per user in the order of a Gigabit per second. The Generalized ShuffleNet (GSN) virtual topology is presented and its main characteristics explored, highlighting modularity and rearrangeability. In particular necessary conditions for rearrangeability have been derived analytically, while the sufficiency has been verified, for particular cases, by a computer program. Moreover a novel, table free, routing scheme ensures high performances by distributed hardware based decisions.
