The city has often had a discontinuous development not for accretion of the original but by addition of separate parts, each with its own identity and formal structure. This has resulted in the formation of spaces devoid of form in places of transition from the closed ancient city to the modern open city, within the extensive structure of the contemporary city and on margins of urban fringes towards nature. These places coincide with urban unresolved voids internal to a urban fabric, with interstitial areas between a fabric and another or between a fabric and infrastructure, or liminal places on the boundary between town and country. But they are also the places in which it is possible to redefine the form of the city through the construction of its spaces referable to two paradigms: the space of the "internity" (urban "rooms": the court and the plaza) as representative of the collective place; the space of the "openness" to establish renewed relationships between the forms of the architecture and the "empty spaces" of the nature. The aim of the research was to define renovated urban form grammars corresponding to appropriate “ideas of the city” in order to build emblematic spaces (squares) with their own unity and finiteness, able to restore hierarchies and centrality in the dispersed and extended city, taking as fundamental value the relationship between "the form of the ground" and the form of urban settlements. The closed cities “on plateau” in the Land of Bari, as Putignano, express in an exemplary way the value of this relationship and they constitute an appropriate study-case both for the clear historical-morphological distinction of their parts (the core ancient walled city, the ‘800-'900 city, and contemporary city) and for the presence of empty internal, interstitial and liminal empty areas.
