The paper reports a new active transponder structure based on a circular cross-polarized slot antenna. The reduced size of the slot antenna, in conjunction to the aptitude of the structure to be fabricated on a single layer, are well suited for transponder applications. Most of all, the high de-coupling between up and down-link strongly reduces the transceiver requirements, while allowing the insertion of a certain amount of transponder gain which ensures a wider operating range. A CAD model of the antenna is discussed and experimentally tested. A transponder based on this slot antenna is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract

The paper reports a new active transponder structure based on a circular cross-polarized slot antenna. The reduced size of the slot antenna, in conjunction to the aptitude of the structure to be fabricated on a single layer, are well suited for transponder applications. Most of all, the high de-coupling between up and down-link strongly reduces the transceiver requirements, while allowing the insertion of a certain amount of transponder gain which ensures a wider operating range. A CAD model of the antenna is discussed and experimentally tested. A transponder based on this slot antenna is experimentally demonstrated.
