A novel tapered two-dimensional photonic bandgap microstrip structure is proposed for increasing the stopband of a lowpass filter. The compact structure, obtained using a meander conductive line and etching in the ground plane a single row of two series of circles, the former Kaiser tapered and the latter of uniform circles, characterised by a different centre frequency of the stopband, shows a very wide stopband. The experimental results show excellent agreement with the numerical ones.
