Incertezza di misura: teoria coerente o edificio da ricostruire? Parte 2: due approcci rivali alla teoria dell'incertezza

This paper illustrates and discusses the main features of two rival approaches to statistical inference, and therefore to measurement uncertainty: the “frequentist” (or “orthodox”), and the “Bayesian” ones. The work is written as a tutorial, suitable to clarify the fundamental aspects of the two approaches, and their relationship with GUM and the issues addressed therein. In particular, it is highlighted that the power and the flexibility of the Bayesian approach require also considerable caution in its use – caution, however, that has perhaps been disregarded in the writing of Supplement 1 of the GUM.

In questo articolo vengono illustrate e discusse le caratteristiche principali di due approcci rivali alla teoria dell’inferenza statistica, e di conseguenza dell’incertezza di misura: il “frequentista” (o “ortodosso”), e il “bayesiano”. Il lavoro ha la forma di un tutorial, adatto a far comprendere gli aspetti fondamentali dei due approcci, e il loro rapporto con le questioni affrontate nella GUM. In particolare, si evidenzia che la potenza e flessibilità dell’approccio bayesiano rendono necessaria anche una notevole cautela nell’adoperarlo – cautela che però è stata forse trascurata nella scrittura del Supplemento 1 della GUM.
