Abstract

In fissured media, especially in karstified rocks, the high heterogeneity, the groundwater flow velocity, the presence of directions and preferential flow levels are factors that bring to uncertainty in planning remediation interventions. Moreover the anisotropy of the physical parameters and the relating different hydrodynamic conditions determine variability and correlation in their spatial distributions that could be well represented throughout geostatistical analysis of the data. The study has been carried out in a specific area, situated in the city centre of Bari, in which the aquifer is heavily contaminated by petroliferous products. Geomechanical data obtained in the carried out boreholes during the different sampling campaigns have been used and in particular the population of RQD (Rock Quality Designation) values has been considered. The simulation of flow obtained applying the finite element computer code Feflow 5.1 (Wasy) and the results of transport simulation have showed a different behavior at all investigated depths. The obtained results delineate a partly different scenario from the one that was defined on the basis of the previously carried out investigations. This three dimensional model represent the essential basis to study the dynamic behavior of the aquifer during any remediation intervention in order to allow optimizations on the theoretic and economic point of view and verifications of the effective functionality of the system; moreover it could be helpful during the monitoring of groundwater quality
