In Mottola area, one of the most important mining district of the Puglia region, quarries of 2nd class materials (limestones for inerts, and calcarenite-tuffs for ashlars) are loacted. The quarries are of two different kinds both surface and undrground pits. Mostly of the layers are worn out since the first years of '90 and actually only three quarries are still productive. The impact on the whole are has been remarkable with deep changes in the landforms either for the environmental aspects or for the the cultural point of view. This phenomenon is particularly clear in the countryside near Casalrotto where there are 60 vacant quarries. The closeness of important naturalistic sites ("gravine") and historical-artistic ones (rupestrian sites and "masserie") needs to be restored not only to improve the environmental condition, but also to ensure the reuse of the area. The study has been organized in two sections: the first part takes into account the quarries, relating to their morphology, geology, town-planning obligations, impact on territory, actual reuses, landscape and its naturalistic, historical and economic components. In the second part the possible reuses have been defined. For each quarry some standards have been identified (kind, surface, closeness to historical sites, environment, infractucture works) and by means of the Analysis with Multiple Criterion (Israel- Keller method) the most probable destination has been described.
