Topic under analysis is the townscape in the figurative culture of Greek and Roman times; the image of the city appears in the Hellenistic age, but indi¬rect evidence enables us to identify the source of the subject as early as the Classical age. In Roman times the townscape takes on more structured shapes and features, although some aspects are still subject to investigation. Views of towns, populated or not, are reproduced in many a document concerning the official, private art as well as the applied ones with different functions and meanings. This paper is not exhaustive at all; it only analyzes some aspects that might contribute to a better understanding of the city representation development in Greek and Roman artistic culture.
