Tuesday October 16th 2012, 6 pm – Hall of the Italian Consulate - Alexandria of Egypt THE ITALIAN PRESENCE IN 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY ALEXANDRIA Opening of the photographic exhibition curated by the architect Mariangela Turchiarulo, from the Politecnico di Bari. Her 22 black and white photographs explore the contribution of Italian architects to the urban development of the modern city of Alexandria between 1850 and 1950. The constructions range from diplomatic buildings, such as the elegant headquarters of the Consulate of Italy overlooking the sea, to structures hosting financial transactions and commercial activities, like the austere Banco di Roma building and the sumptuous Okelle Monferrato store; from institutional palaces, such as the Montazah Palace, the Florentine-style summer residence of the Royal Family, to religious buildings , like the mosques of Al Qa'ed Ibrahim and Abu Al-Abbas Al-Mursi which, with its four impressive domes, arabesque motifs and tall minaret, still today ranks as the largest mosque in Alexandria. The architectural history of Alexandria is in fact evidence of a melting pot of communities with various origins and cultures, who lived peacefully and pieced together the texture of the city, building up the thriving modern Alexandria. The Italian contribution to the process was extensive and prestigious and fully deserves being duly celebrated and remembered, as is the intention of this exhibition.
