In the present paper we study the possibility for elastic solids to support bifurcating periodic deformations reminiscent of the classical planar Couette and Taylor-Couette instabilities observed for fluids. The analysis is performed for an infinitely long isotropic compressible elastic block confined between and attached to parallel plates which are subject to a relative shear displacement. We show through numerical examples that the planar Couette instability mode is always “preferred” with respect to the Taylor-Couette mode. Finally, we briefly study the stability of the fundamental deformation and discuss some features of the bifurcating solutions.
