The evaluation of water hammer in gravitational waterworks is of primary importance for the determination of pipe thickness. Applying the method of virtual piezometric heads, the authors have worked out a representative, mathematical model of the phenomena, taking into account the dissipations along the pipe as well as the outflow process during the closure of the gate. A study is being conducted on the influence of the model parameters on the effects due to unsteady flow.
