Abstract

Nowadays, the planning and development of ports need to be oriented to the protection, safeguard and enhancement of historical, cultural and natural her-itages, since they are very sensible and vulnerable landscaping elements. In effect, modern ports can be considered as “contexts at risk”, because commercial, mercantile, logistic, industrial and energetic activities and plants are located in the closeness of relevant landscaping sites, as well as to urban are-as, potentially generating obsolescence, damage and decay in terms of loss of cultural and historical values. The contribution wants to describe and discuss some principles and guidelines for the proposal of a Charter of Conservation of Historical Ports and Waterfront, in order to promote a scientific debate about the criticalities in the preservation and development of Mediterranean ports. Furthermore, it aims to qualify and classify historical heritages in Med-iterranean ports. Subsequently, the main risk factors in port areas are identified and studied. Finally, strategies and guidelines are explained in order to encourage the mitigation of risks, the preservation and enhancement of those buildings, areas and sites, which represent a unique testimony of the mare nostrum landscape.
