Studying - through the architectural survey methodology - a set of castles spread over a territory such as Apulia allows to investigate complex building typologies, whose morphology is defined by functional and symbolic aspects. At the same time, since castles can be considered palimpsests of a way of building in a given place and at a given time, through them it is possible to study constructive techniques, materials and stylistic diffused elements. This is the study case of the crescent-shaped arches of the great portals in Gioia del Colle and Sannicandro di Bari castles, whose form belongs to a morpheme of architectural language widely used in Apulia in military, civil and religious architectures over a quite extended period of time.

Abstract
Studying - through the architectural survey methodology - a set of castles spread over a territory such as Apulia allows to investigate complex building typologies, whose morphology is defined by functional and symbolic aspects. At the same time, since castles can be considered palimpsests of a way of building in a given place and at a given time, through them it is possible to study constructive techniques, materials and stylistic diffused elements. This is the study case of the crescent-shaped arches of the great portals in Gioia del Colle and Sannicandro di Bari castles, whose form belongs to a morpheme of architectural language widely used in Apulia in military, civil and religious architectures over a quite extended period of time.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
