The Great Quadriporticus of the Western Gymnasion at Kos was excavated first by Italian archeologists (193638) and then by the Greek ArchaeologicalService (197080). The investigations discovered a monumental quadriporticus (197 × 103 m), identified as a huge palaestra. The new studies led to a more detailed analysis of the architecture of the building, that finds parallels only in thegymnasiaof Alexandria, Rhodes and Stratonicea. The quadriporticus, with its 240 marble columns, was built in the second century BC, period of intense building activity which involved many public edifices of the polis, and belongs tothe samekoinéwhich includes the main poleis of the opposite coast.

Abstract
The Great Quadriporticus of the Western Gymnasion at Kos was excavated first by Italian archeologists (193638) and then by the Greek ArchaeologicalService (197080). The investigations discovered a monumental quadriporticus (197 × 103 m), identified as a huge palaestra. The new studies led to a more detailed analysis of the architecture of the building, that finds parallels only in thegymnasiaof Alexandria, Rhodes and Stratonicea. The quadriporticus, with its 240 marble columns, was built in the second century BC, period of intense building activity which involved many public edifices of the polis, and belongs tothe samekoinéwhich includes the main poleis of the opposite coast.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
