An investigation of the influence of stress history and structure on the state-path followed by clays during drying has been carried out. The paper discusses the results of tests concerning the drying behaviour of both a natural stiff illitic clay and the same clay reconstituted in the laboratory. The main differences found between the behaviour of reconstituted samples with different stress histories concern both the air entry value and the specific volume at the shrinkage limit. Moreover also the structure seems to influence the desaturation process, as observed on the natural clays.

Abstract

An investigation of the influence of stress history and structure on the state-path followed by clays during drying has been carried out. The paper discusses the results of tests concerning the drying behaviour of both a natural stiff illitic clay and the same clay reconstituted in the laboratory. The main differences found between the behaviour of reconstituted samples with different stress histories concern both the air entry value and the specific volume at the shrinkage limit. Moreover also the structure seems to influence the desaturation process, as observed on the natural clays.
