MACRO is a large-area detector to be installed in hall B of the Gran Sasso Laboratory. Making use of scintillation counters, plastic streamer tubes, and track-etch detectors, it is designed to search for superheavy magnetic monopoles beyond the Parker bound, high-energy gamma and neutrino cosmic sourcs, and, more in general, exotic phenomena in the cosmic radiation.
