The peculiar rock settlements in the territory of Fasano (Brindisi) are one of the distinctive and most spectacular features in Apulia region. In this paper we describe a series of preliminary mineralogical, petrographic and chemico-physical investigations on samples taken from wall paintings that covered the interior of the church of San Lorenzo. The macroscopic observations carried out in situ together with laboratory investigations, have been used to characterize the original materials employed and, furthermore, to provide a description of the stratigraphy and to allow the recognition of the type of degradation. The general picture of the state of conservation of the church, provided by the analysis, contributed to the identification and allowed to understand the correct way to intervene in view of a subsequent cleaning and restoration of the frescoes.
