This paper demonstrates the feasibility of Micro Friction Stir Welding (μFSW) of dissimilar 2024 T3 - 6082 T6 aluminium alloys, with the 2024 alloy placed on the retreating side. A comparison between the joints of dissimilar and similar materials was carried out in terms of macrostructure and mechanical behaviours. The obtained dissimilar joints showed good mechanical properties with the strength in the transverse direction very close to the 6082 welded with itself. In the longitudinal direction the macrostructure of the stir zone, mainly formed by the 2024 Al alloy, produced a strength that was much higher than that of the 6082 base metal.
