The paper briefly illustrate the main environmental and geological characteristics of the ancient historic centre of Matera, where the rupestrian settlements called “Sassi” are located. Then, it is illustrated how these characteristics conditioned the development and safeguard-ing of the old town. The main purpose of the paper is to present how Matera is an extraordinary example of geological and geo-mechanical features conditioning the human settlement development and their sta-bility and safeguard.

Abstract
