The research aims to investigating the work of the greatest Ottoman architect, Mimar Sinan. The research has a preference for the architectures with central plan and the domed great spaces of the mosques. I’ll try to deepen the technical inventions of the genius of Sinan that through its transversal technical knowledge, learned by some years of experience as planner of bridges and great works at the court of the Sultan Solimano the Magnific, Selim II and Murad III; he allowed to build the great domes avoiding many problems of stability risen in Saint Sofia by means of the thinning of the thickness of the structures buildings: he makes vertical the pushes and makes reticular the reaction of the structure under the action of an earthquake, through the introduction of the iron and the sophistication of the stereotomic equipment. The study of the technology of the building equipment of the cupola is the main objective: to understand the technical and constructive solutions that allow to send towards the bottom the forces avoiding damages caused from horizontal forces; to deepen the study of the shape and the mixed technology stone, brick and iron that Sinan used in its constructions. The main objectives are listed below: • Understanding of the formal geometry of the construction • Individualization of the structural model of the operation of the architectural organism • Recognizing and redrawing some global technological model • Constructive examination of the parts and of the method of equipment of the elements • Critical interpretation of the completed research work of the architecture regarding the technical and formal culture of the time • Critical updating of the formal-constructive model / Perspectives in the architectural design in Mediterranean area. The research has been developed through three phases: 1 - All the work: the analysis of the formal generation of all the Sinan's mosques covered with dome; 2 - The main types: the reconstruction of the formal model and the structural one of the ten samples of its production; 3 - The theory 'reloaded': application of the design theory deduced from previous phases on the Selimiye mosque to Edirne.
