The paper presents an optimisation study for a standard machining operation on polyethylene components. The main problem of such kind of machining is the chip removal, which can be critical also for safety reasons. Fluent chips may also represent a critical issue to face for process time reduction, that can bring sometimes non optimal solutions from the sustainability point of view. The design of experiment performed aims at showing how cryogenic machining operations is a viable alternative to such a kind of problems, addressing either the ecological footprint goal or the economic issue as well. A test case based on real industrial operating conditions were performed to this aim.

Abstract
The paper presents an optimisation study for a standard machining operation on polyethylene components. The main problem of such kind of machining is the chip removal, which can be critical also for safety reasons. Fluent chips may also represent a critical issue to face for process time reduction, that can bring sometimes non optimal solutions from the sustainability point of view. The design of experiment performed aims at showing how cryogenic machining operations is a viable alternative to such a kind of problems, addressing either the ecological footprint goal or the economic issue as well. A test case based on real industrial operating conditions were performed to this aim.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
