Abstract

Bari and Taranto, and above all their seafronts, are among the most successful examples of Italian cities radi-cally transformed by Fascism. It is no coincidence, however, that this transformation is mainly characterized by the construction of new public buildings starting only in the 1930s. It is then that the regime’s policy to-wards the cities manifests itself with greater strength and intensity. The entire peninsula becomes a sounding site, representative buildings of the new state are built everywhere: “Case del Fascio”, post office buildings, banks, stations, barracks, government buildings etc. The paper aims to reconstruct from the Apulian episodes the attempt of Fascism to turn the seafront into monumental and scenic waterfronts, thus privileging the gaze from the sea, often with the creation of panoramic rounds
