Abstract

In Apulia (Southern Italy). as well as in other Mediterranean countries, the energy potential of agricultural residues is estimated to be 25 MJ/(year*ha)[2] that leads to consider that the economically viable size of a biomass fed power plants will range within 3-8 MWe[2]. In this scenario, innovative Dual Combustion Gas Turbine (DCGT) Power Plants fed by Natural Gas and Biomass are examined in this work since they are expected to guarantee good performances without reaching high costs. Specifically, external firing is examined with two alternatives: the atmospheric combustion of solid biomass (scheme A) and the atmospheric fixed bed air gasification (scheme B). The analysis of the thermodynamic cycle has been carried out making use of the software GateCycle ®, while details on the performance of the gasifier have been obtained from experimental tests.
