Abstract

The urban transformations which characterizes the transition from ancient to modern city between the XVIII and XIX centuries are visually reflected through new methods of representation. The case of Bari is emblematic of this shift. The walled medieval town of seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, characterized by narrow winding streets occasionally opening into squares, faces the compact and geometrical system of Enlightenment age designed by Gimma in the first decade of the nineteenth century. From the bird’s eye view of the 17th century which in a single glance incorporates an imprecise forma urbis enclosed within walls highlighted by the major buildings, there is a switch to the drafting of the new urban plan based on topographic maps of modern concept. The birth of the Murat village in 1813 will have the southern walls front demolished and replaced by the palaziata of the new Ferdinandeo course , which will completely close to sight the medieval town. From this moment the perception – and therefore the representation of the city – will definitely change
