Are presented some considerations about the seismic damage to the Este family castles by Bartolino da Novara in the district of Modena as a result of the earthquake of May 2012. It is possible to see that the damage was concentrated where the structures presented discontinuities: caused by differential degradation, but also (and in much more severe form) caused by structural discontinuities even if due to previous structural stiffening interventions. It is possible to assume that in many cases the improvement of the seismic behavior of historic buildings can not be separated from a historical study of their construction and should be oriented to ensure uniformity in behavior rather than strengthening
