The article presents the advantages and disadvantages of existing structures of power systems. Current barriers and challenges in balancing electrical power demands with the help of new socio-technical "smart" ideas are also presented. This paper is an attempt to assess the technical adequacy of existing power systems in relation to future demands enabling the implementation of these ideas.
