Lo spazio della città contemporanea. Grammatiche a confronto

Recognizing the critical aspects of the form of the contemporary city, due to its ‘informal’ condition, the urban project should primarily aim to confer it an ‘order’ that establishes meaningful relationships between ‘solids’ and ‘voids’, an ‘order’ that is often underlying the existing settlement structure and that only needs to be revealed and strengthened. In achieving this goal, the huge empty spaces of nature as well as the brownfields take on a strategic importance. They can have a ‘syntactic’ value, namely the potentiality to accommodate new urban systems able to modify and clarify the morphological and spatial conditions of the existing urban parts or to become the places of their relationships, the ‘scene’ of their representation. The way they are conceived, as space to be filled in or to be left mainly empty, reveals, therefore, the idea of the city of reference as well as the related construction grammars of its form and spaces. The projects for the Antwerp Ring area, developed during the “Over de Ring” International Summer School, set this goal. In their differences, representative of three distinct ways of interpreting the empty spaces of the Ring, the three projects, combining and declining different ideas of the city, express a common tension towards the research of new paradigms useful for the construction of the form of the contemporary city.

Riconoscendo le criticità della forma della città contemporanea, dovute alla sua condizione estesa ed 'informale', il progetto urbano dovrebbe tendere principalmente a conferirle un 'ordine' che stabilisca relazioni significative tra 'pieni' e 'vuoti', un 'ordine' che spesso è soggiacente alla struttura insediativa esistente e che deve solo essere riconosciuto e rafforzato. Nel raggiungimento di questo obiettivo gli spazi vuoti (frammenti di natura e di campagna o aree rese libere dai processi di dismissione) assumono un’importanza strategica. Essi possono avere un valore 'sintattico' nel rinnovamento della forma della città, ovvero la potenzialità di accogliere nuovi sistemi urbani tesi a modificare e chiarire le condizioni morfologiche e spaziali delle parti urbane esistenti o di diventare essi stessi il luogo delle loro relazioni, la 'scena' della loro rappresentazione. Il modo in cui sono concepiti, come spazi da saturare o da lasciare prevalentemente vuoti, rivela, quindi, l'idea della città di riferimento e le relative grammatiche di definizione della sua forma e dei suoi spazi. I progetti per l'area del Ring di Anversa, elaborati durante la Summer School internazionale “Over de Ring”, si sono posti questo obiettivo. Nelle loro differenze, rappresentative di tre modi distinti di interpretare gli spazi vuoti del Ring, i tre progetti, interpretando e declinando differenti idee di città, esprimono una tensione comune verso la ricerca di nuovi paradigmi e grammatiche utili alla costruzione della forma della città del nostro tempo.
