Abstract

Notes are entities, every note may be identified thanks to determined properties and qualities. What kind of categories gets in the play? Relationships arise between notes, between the notes and the interpreter, and between notes and the listener. And another relationship arises between notes, those agents and the composer even across time. This position paper is our very first applying the methods of ontological analysis to the music ‘matter’. In our research path, a first step towards the way of understanding the music score is to proceed with a reading of the written music according to Birkhoff's (1933) formula for the aesthetics measure. This effort would be useful to implement a computer tool that helps to apply Birkhoff’s aesthetic measure.
