To meet its Kyoto requirements, the EU established an internal market for carbon dioxide allowances from 2005, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). National governments are to allocate most of these allowances for free. The operation of electricity generation companies are remarkably affected by the presence of such a mechanism. In this work, an optimization procedure is carried out in order to analyse the mid-term behaviour of electricity generation companies when an ETS is implemented, by means of an allocation plan. The proposed model is applied to the Italian electrical system.
