For several years the Polytechnic of Bari has been developing specific research on surface design (Carullo & Pagliarulo, 2013; Carullo & Pagliarulo, 2016). These studies and their results merged into the foundation of a physical and digital tool for the analysis and design of the sensory potential relating to the materiality of surfaces. This is a database called Inmatex (1) INteraction MATerial EXperience, (Carullo, 2019; Carullo, 2020) designed to add categorization logics to the more or less sophisticated classification logics with which most of the existing material libraries are organized with which to act on the meaning and role that the perceptive sensorial characteristics of material surfaces can assume, to "represent the transformation of matter and the movements of the mind as interconnected phenomena" (Bruno, 2014/2016). For Inmatex this reflection meant activating research and imagining a methodology, including didactic methods, to guide designers and students towards processes of perceptive enhancement of surfaces, with particular results in the textile sector (Carullo & Pagliarulo, 2018). The principle that has guided and guides this path is the need to pay attention not so much to individual materials or families of materials, but to the structuring of material surfaces as scales of relationships, following parties of differentiation of the material.
