The Harmony Search (HS) method is a recently developed optimization method reproducing the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. Although very powerful in principle, the HS method is computationally expensive. This paper presents an improved harmony search formulation where trial designs are generated including information on the gradients of cost function. In addition, line search is carried out in order to find the region of the design space defined by the population of trial designs where there is the largest reduction in cost. The validity of the new formulation is demonstrated in three weight minimization problems of truss structures including sizing and layout variables as well as non-convexity of design space.
