This article presents and compares the characteristics of most studied energy storage techniques, their technological development status, and performances highlighting the advantages of Vanadium redox flow battery. In more details, this article aims to describe the principal characteristics and the challenges of the vanadium redox flow battery. The challenges focus on three different aspects, namely membrane development, electrolyte optimization and electrode development underlining the precipitation problems of the vanadium ions, transportation issues and costs in vanadium redox flow batteries. Different methods and solutions have been presented in this article for overcoming these problems, defining also progress in the large-scale vanadium redox flow battery.
