The article covers the general background and the principal of the metal air battery. The scope is to review the progress made in the anode, in the cathode of metal air battery and in the optimization techniques for improving the operating performances and the design of the metal air battery. The article also summarizes new research fields in the work done for manufacturing this type of battery for large scale capacity, in the application of metal air battery in wastewater treatment, and in the application of metal air battery in water desalination defining also the different challenges facing the commercialization of the metal air battery and the different method to overcome it.
