In this paper, the fundamental characteristics of the photorefractive effect, both in bulk crystals and waveguides, as well as some of the most important photorefractive materials, their properties, and applications, are reviewed. In the last section, we report some experimental considerations on diffracted power from holograms written in pure LiNbO3 and Fe:LiNbO3 crystals and waveguides.

Abstract
