Between the end of the fifties and the beginning of the seventies, studies and researches on the city multiplied in Italy. The principles of building typology in relation to urban morphology and the development of the city become, in this context, the central elements for the elaboration of both the architectural project as a scientific act, as well as a broader theoretical reflection on the role of the architect in the construction of urban space and society. These themes are at the center of the cultural debate regarding the opportunity for a reform of the teaching of the disciplines of the project and of the entire course of studies in architecture. This corresponds to the contingency of the enlargement of the number of enrolled students and the claims of the students with respect to a didactic system that dates back to the 1920s, when the first schools of Architecture were born in Italy under the aegis of the fascist government. The intention of this paper is to dwell on the reconstruction of Aldo Rossi’s scientific contribution to the analysis and study of the city with respect to the cultural climate of the years in question.
