Built on the Taras area, the old city of Taranto is the result of a millennial stratification which, nevertheless, over time has maintained an undeniable cultural continuity. The Greek vestiges, the hypogean system, and the defensive traces currently are in a condition of extraneousness with respect to the diachronic context in which they arise. The operational response to this indecipherable condition and of abandonment, can be provided by the discipline of restoration which, starting from the knowledge of the place, is able to foresee its conservation and re-integration in accordance with the changing needs of the contemporary socio-cultural climate.

Sorta sull’area di sedime di Taras, la città vecchia di Taranto è l’esito di una stratificazione millenaria che nel tempo ha mantenuto una innegabile continuità insediativa. Le vestigia greche, il sistema degli ipogei e le tracce difensive attualmente versano in una condizione di estraneità rispetto al contesto diacronico in cui sorgono. Le risposte operative alla condizione di indecifrabiltà e di abbandono dell’isola possono essere fornite dalla disciplina del restauro che, partendo dalla conoscenza dei luoghi, è in grado di prevederne la conservazione e la reintegrazione in accordo alle mutate esigenze della contemporaneità.
