Contemporary Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) tend to be discussed mostly regarding the techno-economic arrangements that are expected to spark off a widespread diffusion of low- carbon, self-consumption-based energy systems. RECs’ development, however, also appears to be inexorably linked to the socio-territorial networks in which energy cooperation is embedded. To advance the knowledge about territoriality in REC-building processes, the present study focuses first on the interplay between partnerships, energy systems and the environment at the local level, and it then explores the synergies with spatial-strategy making for energy transitions. The preliminary results of a nationwide research project in Italy are presented as limited to two regions: Apulia and Lombardy.
