This study starts by analyzing the organizational, spatial, and functional structure of university campuses. The aim is to investigate the relationships they assume with the urban spaces in which they are located and their actual contribution to their structuring and enhancement. It is well-known how the presence of a university campus heavily affects the dynamics of social (cultural, educational, ...) and physical (services and infrastructure) enhancement of urban systems. This interference is not automatically generated and, often, their lack of planning results in a massive dissipation of resources and effective potentialities by translating into a “loss of development opportunities” for urban communities. In this context, the final reflection on Bari's “Quagliariello” university campus is included, which is read here as a strategic place to start to think about new degrees of physical and social relationship with the city.

Abstract
This study starts by analyzing the organizational, spatial, and functional structure of university campuses. The aim is to investigate the relationships they assume with the urban spaces in which they are located and their actual contribution to their structuring and enhancement. It is well-known how the presence of a university campus heavily affects the dynamics of social (cultural, educational, ...) and physical (services and infrastructure) enhancement of urban systems. This interference is not automatically generated and, often, their lack of planning results in a massive dissipation of resources and effective potentialities by translating into a “loss of development opportunities” for urban communities. In this context, the final reflection on Bari's “Quagliariello” university campus is included, which is read here as a strategic place to start to think about new degrees of physical and social relationship with the city.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
