The castles of Puglia, together with the fortresses, watchtowers, defense towers and fortified farms are the strategic elements of its complex defensive system and mark an important page in the history of the region. In fact, these have not only conditioned the socio-economic structure and the design of the territory but, in the web of stratifications that have driven the events, they also bring an identity of high symbolic value. The aim of this contribution is to bring attention to some emblematic cases, produced by absolutely illustrious clients, designers and workers, as they are capable of composing shapes, materials and structures within organisms that still bear their stylistic code and cultural depth. The factories we are talking about have been progressively updated according to the development of artillery, and therefore have grown over time almost always by addition, incorporating and strengthening the already existing plants and thus enriching their stratifications. The resulting architectures are therefore complex and rarely attributable to precise typologies, also because they were developed according to the orographic particularities of the individual sites, and in cases where these are on the sea, establishing a relationship of intimate complementarity with this. With the support of surveys attentive to the material and formal reality of the individual factories studied, the intent is to increase awareness and create the premises for guiding their protection, despite the actions of the time and recovery operations not always up to the values in game.

I castelli di Puglia, insieme alle fortezze, alle torri di avvistamento, alle torri di difesa e alle masserie fortificate sono gli elementi strategici del suo articolato sistema difensivo e segnano un capitolo importante della regione, non solo perché ne hanno condizionato l’assetto socio-economico e il disegno del territorio ma anche perché nella trama di stratificazioni che ne hanno ordito le vicende portano una identità di elevato valore simbolico. Obiettivo del presente contributo è portare l’attenzione su alcuni casi emblematici, prodotti da committenti, progettisti e maestranze assolutamente illustri, poiché capaci di comporre forme, materiali e strutture in seno ad organismi che ancora oggi ne portano la cifra stilistica e lo spessore culturale. Trattandosi di fabbriche progressivamente aggiornate in funzione dello sviluppo dell’artiglieria, sono cresciute nel tempo quasi sempre per addizione, inglobando e potenziando gli impianti già esistenti e così arricchendone i palinsesti. Le architetture che ne sono risultate sono perciò complesse e raramente riconducibili a precise tipologie, anche perché sviluppate in funzione delle particolarità orografiche dei singoli siti, e nei casi, la maggior parte, in cui questi sono sul mare, stabilendo con questo un rapporto di intima complementarietà. Col supporto di rilievi attenti alla realtà materiale e formale delle singole fabbriche studiate, l’intento è accrescerne la consapevolezza e creare le premesse per orientarne la tutela, a dispetto delle azioni del tempo e di operazioni di recupero non sempre all’altezza dei valori in gioco.
