Part 1 Design: CHAPTER II: Morphology of Traditional Neighborhoods and Typology of Courtyard Houses. Case Study of the Mintaqa As-Sadisa Area

The work presents a comprehensive approach to study the cultural heritage of courtyard houses in the Old City of Aleppo. The basics of understanding what constitutes a traditional house, and the relevant building methods and skills associated with this local architecture. It provides unique hands-on records and broad information, sharing the experience of scholars and professional practitioners, across a variety of disciplines (geography, art history, architecture, archeology, structural engineering, landscape architecture, stone masonry, carpentry… etc.). Based on this introductory work we hope to share the knowledge, and give reference from the past to the current rebuilding efforts and contemporary uses of Aleppo’s traditional architecture and urban fabric in historic environments. A base to restore courtyard houses of the Old City of Aleppo, affected by the war, according to Aleppo’s traditional architectural typology, building materials and techniques.
